Avoid Scams: What is Smishing?! 

Cybercriminals are getting sneaky with a trick called “smishing.”  

Smishing is when cybercriminals use text messages to try and get you to click on bad links. 

The term “smishing” is a blend of “SMS” (Short Message Service, which is the technology used for text messaging) and “phishing” (a word used to describe a type of cyber attack where criminals attempt to trick individuals into providing sensitive information by pretending to be a trustworthy entity).   

At UMe Credit Union, we want you to be aware of these tactics to keep your personal and financial information safe. Stay alert and always verify unexpected messages!  

One common scam is a fake message about an undeliverable package. The text includes a link that might not be clickable, so the scammers tell you to copy and paste the link into your browser, urging you to act quickly — usually within 12 hours! — to confirm your delivery details. 

If you follow those instructions, you could be taken to a website that looks like it’s from a real package carrier, asking for your personal or financial information. But watch out — the site will be a fake, and entering your details will very likely lead to identity theft. 

Here at UMe, we care about your safety and want to help you avoid these scams. Here are some friendly tips to keep you safe: 

  • Be cautious of text messages with unusual instructions, especially if they ask you to copy and paste links. 
  • Be on the lookout for messages that create a sense of urgency, pushing you to act fast. (This goes for a lot of cyber crime!) 
  • If you’re not expecting a package, it’s suspicious to get a delivery text. Simply delete it. 
  • Never tap on links in unexpected messages. It’s always safer to go directly to the official website in your web browser to investigate further.
